In the heart of Pistoia, next to the Cathedral of San Zeno and 10 meters from the Residenza Battistero, stands the Ancient Palace of the Bishops, a building that tells centuries of history and preserves treasures of inestimable value.
Built in the 11th century as the residence of the city’s bishops, the palace is a fascinating example of medieval architecture, enriched by successive historical stratifications ranging from the Romanesque to the Baroque. One of the most intriguing elements of the Palace is the Diocesan Museum, which houses an extensive collection of sacred art, liturgical furnishings and historical documents. Among the works on display, stand out the frescoes of the cycle of the Months, attributed to Giovanni Boldini, which decorate the Hall of the Bishops with lively representations of daily life and the seasons and the Millefiori Tapestry, the most important textile work in the city and symbol of Pistoia.
The private chapel of the bishops, dedicated to San Jacopo, is another hidden jewel. Inside, 14thcentury frescoes and the marble altar offer a spectacle of sacred art that captivates visitors. During the restoration work of the palace, remains of Roman and medieval structures were discovered, now visible in the museum path, which testify to the long and rich history of the site.
The library and historical archive of the Palace hold manuscripts, incunabula and documents of great importance for the history of the Church and the city of Pistoia. These literary treasures offer a unique look at the religious and cultural life of the region over the centuries.
The Ancient Palace of Bishops is not only a testimony to the past, but a living place, which continues to amaze and fascinate its visitors, thanks to its hidden corners and little-known stories. Each room, every fresco, every document tells a story, making the visit an unforgettable experience for anyone who wants to discover the secrets and wonders of Pistoia and the best way to do it can only be to stay there a few steps away.
